The fastest single fix for a tired lawn

Core Aeration

Townsville soil goes hard and hydrophobic. Water runs off instead of soaking in. Coring opens the profile back up.

  • Water soaks in instead of running off
  • Roots grow deeper and thicker
  • Relieves compaction from foot traffic and clay

Why it works here

The soil under most Townsville lawns is hardsetting sodic clay. It compacts, it sheds water, and the roots stay in the top couple of centimetres where they cook in the dry.

Coring pulls plugs out so air, water and nutrients get down to the root zone. It is the difference between a lawn that survives the dry and one that powers through it.

How we do it

We core to 75–100 mm and no deeper. The clay layer under a Townsville lawn starts at about 15–20 cm and it sits at pH 8.5 to 9.6 — drag that onto the surface and you've made the problem worse, not better.

The machine pass is roughly fifteen minutes per 100 m². We can run it any month of the year here, though outside March to May you'll want to water more than usual and the recovery takes a little longer.

Buffalo lawns

Coring is safe on buffalo. Each pass disturbs one to three percent of the surface, the stolons bridge the holes, and 97 to 99 percent of the mat stays intact.
